How much should a first machine cost?
Enough that it has a target ID number and a real discrimination system, which in practice means more than a toy and less than a flagship. The genuinely cheap machines are not a bargain: an analogue two-knob detector such as the Bounty Hunter Tracker IV will find coins, but it tells you very little about what is under the coil, so you dig everything and tire of it. At the other end, a Minelab Manticore in the hands of somebody who has never swung a coil is a very expensive way to learn what a nail sounds like.

What should the first month look like?
- Secure ground first. Your own garden, a friend garden, or a written permission. Detecting before you have somewhere legitimate to do it is how people acquire bad habits.
- Build a test garden. Bury known targets at marked depths in ground you control, and learn what your machine says about each. This is the single highest value day of the first month.
- Run one mode for the first ten hours. Pick the general purpose or park mode and leave it alone. You are learning the audio, not tuning the machine.
- Dig everything for the first few sessions. Including the iron and the tabs. You cannot learn what a good signal sounds like without digging the bad ones for comparison.
- Practise the plug, every single time. Hinged plug, soil on a mat, tread it flat, check from standing height. Make it automatic before you are ever on somebody else land.
- Keep a notebook. Site, mode, what the ID read, what came out. Six weeks of that is worth more than any chart, because it describes your ground and your machine.
- Only then change one setting at a time. Sensitivity first, recovery speed later. Change two things at once and you learn nothing from either.
Which mistakes cost the most?
Swinging too fast is first. A slow, low, overlapping sweep gives the machine several looks at a deep target and a fast sweep gives it one, which is why two people on identical machines get different results on the same patch. Keep the coil low and level throughout the arc rather than letting it rise at the ends.
Second is notching out trash too early. The pull tab band is also where most gold rings read, as the master target ID chart sets out, so a notch wide enough to remove tabs removes rings too. Third is buying a bigger coil to fix a trashy site, which is backwards: dense trash calls for a smaller coil, and the coil size chart explains the trade. Fourth is giving up on a site after one pass, when the same ground in different soil moisture behaves like a different site altogether.
Where can a beginner legitimately hunt?
Your own ground, first. Then permissions you have asked for properly, which is a skill covered in the permission guide. Then whichever public ground your municipality actually allows, which you confirm by reading the ordinance rather than by watching somebody else do it. What you do not do is treat an absence of signage as permission, or assume that because a park is public it is open to digging. Do I need to learn ground balancing immediately?
